Scarlett Johansson

Despite being a bit lost when it comes to her own style, Scarlett Johansson has nevertheless found a way to become a fashion icon. Marc Jacobs used his magic to transform the young, overly glamorous girl into a mischievous and tantalizing Lolita. His 2007 campaign reveals a Mademoiselle Johansson as a sophisticated woman and a young girl in full bloom, the perfect mix between sensuality and candor.

It is no surprise that Johansson has had little time to seriously study her look and that she has taken the easy route. If we are to believe her stylist, the actress was obliged to wear outfits that showed off her figure. As a result, she became a caricature of herself: vampish, seductive, with a very red mouth wearing long sheath dresses with plunging necklines.

It is easy to forget that she is only 22. There is a real contradiction between Johansson's off-camera style, which is casual, fresh and upbeat, and the padded glamour avalanche that occurs every time the red carpet is rolled out. Of course, she cannot wear the same outfit to different events, but there should be an underlying style, something that comes from the woman herself that does not change. Take Kate Moss, for example: whatever the event, her style is recognizable, as is the case for (the French actresses) Lou Doillon and Vanessa Paradis.

In short, Johansson has not yet found herself. It is difficult to know who you are if you have been living with a projection of yourself almost all your life. She began working very early with a certain kind of maturity, a seriousness almost illogical given her young age. At 14, the general public discovered her in the role of Grace in The Horse Whisperer, for which she received a Young Star Award.

Since then, the film directors and the press have been following the development of this young girl with the pouty face and sure talent. Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation pushed her up to the level of bankable actresses and won her a nomination for best actress. The film separated her from the others, made her into a sort of free electron that the rest of the world wanted, from independent cinema to huge American productions.

Johansson has the power to make men all over the world fantasize. In 2006, she was elected the sexiest woman in the world by the American readers of FHM. Directors, actors, designers, all fell under her strange charm, her generous figure and her Hitchcockian blond hair.

It was almost predictable that Woody Allen would make her his muse. Match Point and Scoop were two little chefs d'oeuvres in which the master director offered the actress her best roles. She did not stop making Hollywood blockbusters, however, e.g., The Island, which was a less than masterful work.

The year 2007 should be the year when Johansson will shine and finally come into her own, reconciling her youth and her allure. She has more freedom than ever and openly shares her opinions, e.g., that she is impatiently waiting for the end of the Bush administration.

She is not seeking monogamy and has a relatively convincing hunting record to prove it, including Benicio Del Toro, Jared Leto and Josh Hartnett. She is a workaholic and goes from one project to another. This year she will appear in no less than five films: The Prestige, A Good Woman, The Nanny Diaries, The Other Boleyn Girl and Brilliant.

All she needed was a good designer, a wardrobe that reveals who she is as opposed to caricaturizing her, a style that matches her personality, who knows how to emphasize her contradictions and her particular personality.

This has been accomplished with the spring-summer 2007 Louis Vuitton campaign for which she is the icon. Reebok and Vuitton form the perfect partnership so that Johansson, wearing both hats, coul also find her own style.

The result was immediate. During fashion week, Johansson was seen attending the shows, fulfilled and sublime...

Too bad that Scarlett Johansson's album (with Pete Yorn!) did not do better... :( I guess it would have been too much to ask, that she be a musical genius as well
