Erin Wasson x RVCA: the end of the road?

21 07 2010

Word on the street has it that the line created by model Erin Wasson for the surfwear label RVCA may be absent from the next New York fashion week catwalks -- not because she decided to go for an intimate approach by preferring a private presentation to a flashy show, but because she is being erased from the fashion landscape entirely.

Erin Wasson x RVCA

Trends come and go, taking with them those who fed their success. Yesterday's headliners thus become tomorrow's has-been's, and former idols are sacrificed on the altar of the latest ones.

Such could be the epilogue for Wasson's RVCA adventure. She may have landed a contract with this Californian label, but the Alexander Wang muse's grungy-bohemian style is no longer en vogue, and the trend has faded, leaving the fashionistas overdosed with frayed cut off jeans. RVCA may have benefitted from an improved visibility thanks to Wasson's aura, but the line designed by her never met with the hoped-for success.

It was unsurprising that the new owner of the surfwear label, Billabong, hesitated to prolong an unprofitable, seemingly outdated association. Wasson's departure has not yet been confirmed by the two parties concerned, but it seems that the pretty Texan's hour has come.

Apart from Rumi de Fashiontoast, those shedding tears over her departure are rare. Between the pieces without interest, overly obvious Wang inspirations and others seemingly copied-and-pasted, Wasson's collections have hardly revolutionized her time.

If the rumors are confirmed, the young woman will have nothing left to express her creativity but her jewelry line, Low Luv, which has also been tainted with suspicions of plagiarism. To be continued...
