Karl Lagerfeld for Volkswagen

16 12 2010

The way things are going, guessing the next brand to profit from the Kaiser's image could become a favorite game of the fashion world. Despite his intense professional life, Chanel's creative director seems to be increasingly fond of pursuing unusual experiences, especially when they allow "the Lagerfeld marionette" to be the center of attention.

Karl Lagerfeld for Volkswagen

At an age where a good number of his contemporaries are content to savor the fruits of a life well lived, Lagerfeld continues to bring out collection after collection and participate in collaborations of all kinds. Always showing up where he is least expected, today the well-dressed 70-something has decided to bless the automotive world with his presence.

Approached by German car manufacturer, the man who had just delivered a sublime Paris-Byzance collection found the time to incarnate his own character in a series of commercials in which we can see him shooting various Volkswagen cars. Directed by Johan Renck (who brought us the video for Madonna's "Hung Up") and coached by Matthias Becker (Volkswagen's marketing director), Lagerfeld was, according to them, like a fish in water.

When we think about it, it is surprising that the Kaiser has not flirted more with the 7th art, given how colorful his character is. When will we be seeing him in an episode of Gossip Girl or in front of Sofia Coppola's camera?

While waiting to discover his possible acting talents, we will have to settle for the 30 second commercials showing him as a paparazzi addicted to beautiful German cars.

The commercials will be viewable on YouTube staring December 22 (they will not be distributed in France)
